Look for slowly dropping flows all around back to the baseline Canal and normal run of the river contributions. All weigh-ins will be at the Black North Inn by 3 PM. We recommend wearing cleats and to always be careful crossing. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. This up and down would be mostly unnoticed under ice cover anyway, except for on the Oak. Nice to see some chances spread thru the watercourse now with fish that are all mostly in good shape. All the trib flows will be on the rise and melting and probably going off color. Especially with the way the weather is proceeding. Flows in the other smaller waterways are about medium and slightly stained, likely offering up a nice fishable window for now. Some big steelhead are still in the Oak! After several days of strong west winds both charter and Rec boats got back out. The other area smaller tribs have good looking med and slightly stained flows for now and likewise should be dropping back toward mod or lower and clearer. 1764 Oak Orchard Rd (Rte. Port Bay water is very warm and there has been weed growth near the south end. The other area smaller tribs comparitively to the Oak anyway, have better looking flows at low to mod and slightly stained viz. The other area smaller tribs have a fair amount of icing. By most accounts if youre moving around and trying different drifts and spots, guys are hooking up. The presentation is not that technical, just look for favorable winds and water color. There was a little bit of snow showers too that is melting off today. Less noticeable will be in Sandy since Canal flows there are throttling up. A beautiful 15 lb steelhead had hit the deck. All the trib flows are on the retreat from the last rain. Sacs are working for trout and skein is the ticket for salmon. Thru the past weekend we heard of guys getting steelhead hookups nearer the dam including a few good fish. If you catch one, please release it immediately and not harm it. Fishing pressure light and angler reports thin. Flows in the Oak are restored thru the turbine channel. No icing anywhere and the downstream slow water is wide open. Ground flow recharge from strong supplies might keep things up a little higher then typical winter levels but never-the-less things will be icing in or freezing up except for a few fast water slots. Stream Conditions - Fish Oak Orchard A dropping and clearing water scenario is a contrast for what youd rather see as rising or high flows for best chances at fresh fish migrations. Water temps for now are already in the the high 30s F on the Oak and prob going higher with the forecasted warmup thru the end of this week. And maybe into the early spring! With the previous high and off color flows in the Oak its been a bit of a challenge for good drifts and swings. Now some silver browns hooked up too, as has been the case on the smaller tribs like to the east. The medium to slightly high flows in the Oak are proving to be a nice draw for Kings. Going SW or just by the nature of the LES bands having moved around, accumulations will be more in different nearby areas. Saturday afternoon we fished 150-200 in water a few miles west of Port. That sounds like a receipe for fresh fish migrations in all the waterways and the chance for brown trout and steelhead hook ups! That good run of Kings in the Oak from end of last week has spread out nearest the dam, but guys are finding pods of spawning fish in the downstream fast water reaches. Chance of icing in select areas. Chance of rain and colder temps and windy conditions for the end of the week but back to relatively mild temps again by the weekend. So, flows, weather and fishing action are somewhat up and down. DEC has received a few reports of dead fish on Sandy Creek and Johnson Creek, likely due to fishing mortality, but has not received any reports of abnormally large numbers of dead fish from Oak Orchard Creek. Expect mod to med, but just less then med mostly clear flows in the Oak. Once pressured, browns may move a little distance from the tails of the salmon but they will still likely be in the closest broken water downstream. There has been light mixed precipitation thru today with highs in the 30sF. Forecast is for a warmup with temps around 50F (and wind) for the mid week and chance of rain on Thursday. The Oak Orchard Harbor is in the process of being dredged which started last week (8/25) and is expected to be finished in mid September. Second season trout action now with light fishing pressure and still reasonable weather with all kinds of water to fish seems like the name of the game right now! Oh winds could shift it this way and that would mean well get some snow. Mainly with an old school program. No lunch will be offered and no fly fishing tourney will be held. New York State is open for fishing and DEC encourages anglers to recreate locally at a nearby waterbody. The parking donation will be $10 per car. Same for the LES that is coming. Look for drop back fish to be living there for now, with the other most productive spots being right at the dam or overflow channel pool. As we started getting into 90-100 we noticed a ton of bait and big fish on the bottom. Those fish deserve a chance to immigrate back out to the Lake if caught and released back into the turbine channel. All the trib flows look on the retreat from previous snowmelt and precipitation. On their way to Wilson Harbor, he reports that they started catching browns and cohoes just shy of Shadigee in 7-10 FOW. Last night at dusk I had no problem finding some Kings crashing and boiling around at the Bridges area on the Oak and even a few at Point Breeze. May 21st is the scheduling for the canal opening. This latest rise in flows and continued cool down should kick off better brown trout migrations in the Oak setting up good drifting chances into November and maybe into December with reasonable weather hanging in. King salmon are scheduled for release today, that effort under the directive of the local charter community. That may be a result of the good flows bringing in those steelhead. It looks like a real good head of turbine water with no significant overflow water. Some reports of stained water color to the east which could be a result of Canal drainage. They scored 4 king salmon (17-20 lbs) and a trophy sized steelhead weighing in at 16 lbs. Pitch a retrieve and wait for the hard jolt! Anglers seeing and having hook up success on browns is encouraging we are likely on a trajectory to out pace last years brown trout action already. Well just have to wait and see if itll be a hard and fast melt or something a little more moderate and gradual. Opportunities right now may not be for multiple hookup days but the chances are there for a few hard worked at bites with light fishing pressure in real nice flows and not bad weather conditions. Aiden also won the Youth Division with that salmon. The smaller side channels and Trout and Orwell brook all have fish; which are providing the most action at this time. The only sure way to know is to get out there and make a few drifts! The area received a few inches of wet snow and sleet thru the end of the past week. The longer range forecast looks like back to colder for rest of next week. Started in fairly shallow 80-120FOW and got some nice kings first thing in the morning but things slowed.
